1. "Massage Situation" - Flying Lotus
I enjoy the song "Massage Situation" by Flying Lotus because it is unique and you don't hear much music like it. The main melody is my favorite part. I like the way the intro goes for so long and then the music finally changes around the middle of the song. I find it interesting. I haven't listened to anything else by this artist, but i intend to. Honestly, I'm not sure what genre this would fit under. It's somewhat electronic, but I wouldn't call it techno.
2. "The Curtain With" - Phish
"The Curtain With" is definitely one of my favorite songs. I have to play it every time I'm in the car. I love everything about it. It has a good beat and Trey is great on the guitar. It brings back so many great memories of watching Phish perform in Miami. It reminds me of how good it felt to be around so many people who live the same way and like the same things I do. People were just having fun, dancing, and being free. I like this song a lot because the tone and mood keeps changing and growing and surprising you. The video I have is the actual show jon and I were at.
3. "Strawberry Fields" - The Beatles
I chose the song "Strawberry Fields" by the Beatles for my top ten playlist because I have always loved the Beatles. I grew up listening to them with my parents and, in a way, I feel that they have had some sort of influence on my outlook on life. I enjoy the song Strawberry Fields because it's mysterious and gets you thinking. It has always been one of my favorite songs. It brings back lots of memories of when I was young. When I was sixteen I visited Strawberry Fields in NYC and John Lennon's apartment.
4. "Boogie On Reggae Woman" - Phish
"Boogie On Reggae Woman" is one of my favorite songs right now. It makes me want to get up and dance. I think the instrumentals in this song are great and unique. Fishman is really good on the drums, even though it's a lot of the same beat throughout the song. This is also a video from the Phish show we were at in Miami at American Airlines Arena. That might be another reason I like it so much. It brings back a lot of good memories that I want to relive!
5. "Tetris Theme" - Heatbox
I chose "Tetris Theme" because Heatbox is probably one of the coolest artists I have ever seen. The first time I heard him was at Briar Patch in July of '09. He makes all the sounds in his music himself and does loops to eventually build up to an entire song made completely out of his voice. I like "Tetris Theme" because it seriously does sound like the Tetris theme, but a person is making all the noises with his throat. I have no clue what genre this would be classified under.
6. "Free" - Phish
I know I have put a few live songs by Phish on here already, but this is the last one. I enjoy both the live and album versions of "Free". They are very different sounding. I chose the live one because I listen to it more and I'm just really into live music. It's more real. I swear when I was at this show, this song made me sprout wings and fly away like a free bird. It was so uplifting and perfect for the moment. "Free" makes me want to roam and wander the world for the rest of my life, never having to worry or have a care in the world again. It just makes me want to be on my own, escaping from the plain, boring Iowa world I'm used to and discovering new things. All the musical instruments tie together so well. It's a masterpiece. Phish is just great.
7. "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" - Led Zeppelin
First of all, Led Zeppelin is one of the greatest bands of all time. It's like they can never get old. I chose the song "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" for my playlist because it has always been one of my favorite songs by them. It's full of such diverse melodies and harmonies and I love that it's so long.
8. "Lay Low" - Public Property
Public Property is a band from Des Moines. I really like their vibe and it's awesome that they are from here because that opens up lots of opportunities to go see them play. I have only seen them twice, but i intend on seeing them some more. I chose the song "Lay Low" because it reminds me of a warm tropical summer night on a nice beach. It's a really chill song that isn't too much but isn't too little. I really like the reggae sound of Public Property. All their voices meld together very well to create a nice harmony.
9. "Man vs. Machine" - Heatbox
I chose the song "Man vs. Machine" by Heatbox because it is WILD how he makes the record scratching noises and every noise you hear in the music is made by his voice box. It just baffles me as to how it's even possible for him to make his music all out of his own voice. I like "Man vs. Machine" because it just shows how much talent he has not only in beat boxing but also in singing. This song seriously blows me away.
10. "Shake a Fist" - Hot Chip
I really like "Shake a Fist". Hot Chip has a very unique sound to their music. I have never seen them live, but I would like to. It would be so fun. I like the beat of this song a lot. It makes me want to get up and dance. The sounds of the studio part is really cool. The screaming part in the sounds of the studio section is a little strange, but it still works with the craziness of the song.
